Meet The Maker: Daffodil Metal Designs

Here is another spotlight on one of our local artists that we carry in store. We call this our Meet the Maker series. This piece is written by Andrew who is half of the husband and wife duo that form Daffodil Metal Designs.

When a spinal fusion surgery put my career in the sciences and education on hold in 2015, I used my recovery time to explore my creative instincts by enrolling in basic silversmithing workshops. Finding the creative process therapeutic, I adapted a home studio to suit my physical limitations and sought knowledge about metal work and jewelry making in library books and video tutorials. The scientist in me is fascinated with the jewelry making process: the chemistry and physics that go into permanently fusing metal to metal through intense heat and fire, and the biology and ecology of observing details and patterns in nature. I’m continually inspired to look closer and gain a greater understanding of the natural world around me, and working with materials such as metal and stone allow me to do just that.

My pieces start with simple materials such as sheet metal, wire, and recycled scrap silver that are gradually transformed using traditional silversmithing techniques that have been used for thousands of years. The use of heavy gauge materials results in sturdy, durable settings that frame and protect stones, focusing attention on their natural beauty. Although my finished pieces are often rustic in nature with a multi-layered distressed patina, my process is precise; I work under magnification to create meticulously crafted pieces with clean lines and carefully joined parts.

My wife and business partner has formed relationships with some of the best lapidary artists in the country, enabling us to offerjewelry crafted with the finest and rarest natural turquoise and other gemstones from the American Southwest and Pacific Northwest, often from Native American miners and stone cutting families. I take pride in the creation of meaningful one-of-a-kind and custom pieces for both new and repeat clients.
